The Arizona immigration law, recently signed by Governor Jan Brewer, has won few fans. The bill has within the ranks of detractors, the President, the Mexican government, Janet Napolitano, and Meghan McCain. The debate is over methods, though it is an issue in need of redress. The problem already sends Arizona running for a personal loan company to deal with it.
Janet Napolitano condemns Arizona immigration law
The Arizona immigration law was blasted by Janet Napolitano. As head of the Department of Homeland Security, she feels that the law in question “is a misguided law.” (From CNN .) Illegal immigration reform is an issue that has taken a back burner to other issues, and it appears that the current uproar might push it to the forefront of the Congressional and Presidential agendas before long.
Meghan McCain breaks rank
Meghan McCain daughter of John McCain, does not agree with her father on this one. She recently wrote a post on The Daily Beast declaring it a “bad law” and that it “misses the bigger picture of what is really going on with illegal immigration.” She also said those who do not see the daily impact of illegal immigration can’t grasp the complexity of it, especially when we clearly depend to them without acknowledging it.
Statements from the Government of Mexico
The President of Mexico himself denounced the bill, and Governor Brewer for having signed it. President Felipe Calderon issued a statement announcing his aggravation with the measure.
“The criminalization of the migration phenomenon, far from contributing to the cooperation and collaboration between Mexico and the U.S., represents an obstacle in the solution of common problems in the border region.” – from Christian Science Monitor .
He was not the sole Mexican official to do so. It would appear that numerous think the contributions of immigrants, especially Latino Americans, goes unappreciated and also the attitude has been even hypocritical while Washington has done nothing.
This is not the first bill of its kind
There has been previous hard line legislation aimed at immigrants. It never works, either. It is apparent that numerous immigrants wish to come to this land to earn a quick payday with honest toil. A solution that doesn’t benefit both sides would seem remiss, though you will find certainly always bad apples. There is supply and demand for their labor, and very little standing in the way of those forces goes un-circumvented for long.
